Depression is only a phase

Depression is Only a Phase

Everyone of us would go through a stage in life wherein everything seems to be wrong.  It may be due to fear or anxiety of a situation or even hopelessness. Think of it…tense about an examination, worried about huge bills? Continuously being insulted or even tortured by someone? Feeling destroyed after the death of a loved one? Failure in love?  There could be several reasons like this and the result will be that you enter depression.

Depression is one of the most common types of mental health conditions and often develops alongside anxiety. This can be mild and short-lived or severe and long- lasting. Some people are affected by depression only once, while others may experience it multiple times.

What causes it?

Depression can happen as a reaction to something like abuse, violence in school, the death of someone close or family problems like domestic violence or family breakdown. Someone might get depressed after being stressed for a long time. It can also run in the family. Sometimes we may not know why it happens.

Symptoms

Physical

Tiredness or low energy, even when rested

  • Restlessness or difficulty concentrating
  • Difficulty in carrying out daily activities
  • Changes in appetite or sleep patterns
  • Aches or pains that have no obvious cause

 Emotional and mental

  •  Persistent sadness, anxiousness or irritability
  •  Loss of interest in friends and activities that they normally enjoy
  • Withdrawal from others and loneliness
  • Feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness or guilt
  • Taking risks, they wouldn’t normally take
  • Self-harming or suicidal thoughts

Consequences

Depression can lead to suicide, but this is preventable when appropriate support is provided. It’s important to know that much can be done to help young people who are thinking about suicide.

However, death is immediate; the bigger danger comes when you live with depression.  Your mind plays a lot of games and you go through feelings that can’t be expressed. During a depressive episode, a person experiences a depressed mood (feeling sad, irritable, empty). They may feel a loss of pleasure or interest in activities. His or her immediate solace or “thirst for relief” will be through addiction.

When a person is depressed, it can be tempting to relieve depressive symptoms by turning to drugs and/or alcohol. An estimated one-third of people with clinical depression engage in substance abuse as a form of self-medication to relieve feelings of hopelessness, low-self-opinion, and despair.

Depression can raise the risk of substance abuse, as chemical intoxicants can be a way to self-medicate by numbing feelings of despair. This chemical intoxication can make depressive episodes more severe, thereby exacerbating self-destructive behavior and pessimistic thoughts.

Hence, instead of immediate destruction through suicide, addicted people die slowly. Drugs, alcohol, excessive smoking, and even self-harm are the culprits here. Their bodies weaken and they live detached from the rest of the world.  This can be terrifying. In addition, everyone around them, including family, relatives and acquaintances get affected.

The Cure

There is no permanent cure for anxiety, feeling anxious is ideally a temporary state of mind that resolves when a stressor or trigger has passed. If anxiety is severe or persistent, it may be a sign of an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders are treatable, and there are many options available. There are specified medical practitioners or this mental agony but an alternative would be to opt for simply natural methods that include,

  • Meditation.
  • Relaxation exercises
  • Writing
  • Aromatherapy
  • Herbal supplements
  • Time with nature
  • And more

How do I know all this? That is because I myself had been a victim of depression and consequent alcoholism. It destroyed everything that I had and brought danger to everyone I loved; including my life partner. However, I have been blessed and that’s why today I am the best-selling author of a book as well as a de-addiction coach.
