Causes of Alcoholism - by Author Madaswamy Pillai
Alcoholism is a term that is sometimes used to describe what is known as an alcohol use disorder (AUD). Alcohol use disorder is considered a progressive disease, meaning that the effects of drinking alcohol become increasingly more severe over time. The condition is likely the result of a combination of genetic, social, psychological, and environmental factors. This blog explores the causes and how you can fight alcoholism.
Genetics: This plays a significant role as certain people may be more vulnerable to the disease. Genes that are associated with increased risk for alcohol dependence are ADH1B gene, ALDH2 dene and GABRA2 gene.
Environmental Factors: A person’s surroundings or even the people around him/her can influence the urge to lift a bottle. In addition, use of alcohol in the family, relationship issues, peer pressure and/or work-related stress can contribute to the disease.
Physical Factors: Some people have a lesser tolerance to alcohol and could get addicted easily while others may not. That is, it will take them more quantities to suffer from alcoholism. However, the consequence is the same. It is like comparing a person who falls from the 5th floor and another from the 7th floor. The consequence (death) is the same for both, right?
Psychological Factors: Stress, peer pressure, bad relationships, and also mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder can increase the risk of alcoholism.
Brain Chemistry: This in some ways related to “Physical Factors”. Some people have more control over how their brain ‘acts’ or ‘reacts’. For example, there may be people who argue with bosses regarding sudden change in company rules, while there may be others who just keep silent and bear it all; watchmen for instance. Alcoholism alters this chemistry in the brain by altering levels of transmitters and impacting neuro-function. These affect a person’s mood, behavior, thinking, and decision-making abilities. In simpler words, you will always irrationally if suffering from alcoholism.
Cultural and Social Factors: Alcohol is often considered normal and glamourized in various lifestyles. For example. Drinking at parties, social occasions and marriage functions have become a normal custom for the current generation. Hence, the chances of addiction are greater.
